Let’s Talk About Employment in the Film Industry

Categories: Career

Let’s say you already have your first portfolio, resume, and a LinkedIn profile. We’ll have the chance to discuss all of that separately. What’s next, and what are the job prospects in the Ukrainian and international film industries? Let’s explore typical entry-level career paths.

Ukraine: How to Find a Job in the Film Industry.

In recent years, the Ukrainian market for production companies and visual effects studios for advertising, film, and television has shown growth. The pandemic and the war have, of course, introduced changes, but work opportunities still exist—mainly focusing on advertising, music videos, and series, while the share of film projects has somewhat decreased.

What Do We Have?

  • Production Companies. Over 100 production companies operate in Ukraine, producing advertisements, films, and television content. Notable examples include Pronto Film, Solar Media Entertainment, FILM.UA Group, Radioaktive Film, and Star Media. These companies not only create Ukrainian content but also collaborate with international studios and agencies.
  • Visual Effects (VFX) Studios. The VFX market in Ukraine is quite advanced, particularly in film and advertising. Studios like Postmodern, Terminal FX, and Raketa Film have long established their reputation in the industry. Ukraine has over 20 VFX studios that work with both local and major international projects.
  • Animation and CGI. Studios such as Animagrad (a part of FILM.UA Group) and Karandash create animated films and series for both Ukrainian and international markets.

Ukrainian studios are always in need of specialists who can deliver quality work. A good approach is to research interesting Ukrainian studios and submit your portfolio through their websites. Working with Ukrainian studios can help you build a strong portfolio, gain industry insights, and acquire the experience needed for more complex projects.

Working in Film for International Companies

If you already have experience and can work not only with high quality but also efficiently, it may be time to consider international opportunities. This is especially relevant for post-production specializations, which often allow you to work from anywhere in the world.

  • Working Through Ukrainian Studios. You can continue working in a Ukrainian studio while taking on projects for international clients. Ukrainian specialists have a strong reputation on the global stage, and many foreign companies outsource work to Ukrainian studios.
  • Freelancing. Platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, or Behance are popular choices for Ukrainian specialists, allowing you to work with clients worldwide without leaving the country. Freelancing is especially suitable for beginners looking to gain experience and who have strong organizational skills.
  • Foreign Studios. If you’re confident in your skills and ready for larger projects, consider applying directly to foreign studios. International studios frequently seek specialists on platforms like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and ProductionHUB. However, don’t aim for top studios right away; landing those roles often requires time and a robust portfolio.

Working in the international industry, especially after the pandemic, has become more accessible as many studios have shifted to hybrid or WFH (Work from Home) models. Additionally, they have started outsourcing more work to reduce costs. This creates new opportunities for Ukrainian professionals who aspire to work in foreign markets without leaving Ukraine.

The Overall Industry Situation

Opportunities for employment in the Ukrainian and international film industries remain significant, particularly in VFX, animation, and post-production. However, it’s important to be realistic: this isn’t a “film boom” or a golden period where every studio is urgently seeking hundreds of new specialists and waiting for you to join the next blockbuster. If you see anyone promising this, they’re likely just trying to get your money for training or other services. Following the Hollywood strike of 2023, production slowed significantly, and the number of projects globally decreased as industry players suffered major losses and now need time to recover.

But that doesn’t mean the outlook is grim. The market is moving more slowly, which actually creates an opportunity for newcomers. You have time to prepare: improve your skills, build your portfolio, and be ready for the moment the market picks up again. The demand for film won’t disappear, and after the industry restructures, content production is likely to grow.

And if you’re as passionate about film as we are, Pixel Camp is here to help you prepare for when the industry gains momentum again 🙂
